How The Time Flies

Now:

Then:

The Saints Simon & Jude Fall Festival. I have been going since I was a kid. My father works one of the booths, and when I was a kid I would ride the rides, eat tons of crap and hang out with my friends. It was a blast.
Today Aidan and I went with Aunt Leslie, his cousin Connor and his new cousin James. Leslie and I have been friends for nearly 30 years. We met freshman year of high school. That was September of 1980. We used to go the festival when we were in high school. EVERYONE went! It was cool and fun. Today it was all about the kids. I remember going many years back and recognizing folks from high school as they walked with strollers with their kids.

So here is me, 42 with a toddler and Leslie, 42 with a toddler and a 5 month old, showing our kids the glory of the fall festival. What an amazing milestone! I felt glorious, and OLD at the same time. I saw all the high school kids being cool and the high school friends looking just like Leslie and I did so many years ago. And there we were amongst them-practically middle-aged mothers. Who could have expected it?
Damn was I happy.

Until I ran into a sister of a little one I used to babysit for when I was a kid. She proudly walked over to me and introduced herself. I remembered her. She has children older than Aidan. We reminisced for a little bit, then I asked how old "little* Danny was:

Dear god...

He is 30 years old!

UGH!

I remember riding my bike to that festival for years!! It was always the highlight of the fall! Especially when I was old enough to ride my bike there with my friends (probably 10 years old) without mom & dad coming. :-) Boy how tiems have changed! I would never let my 10 year olds go to a festival, even at a church, without supervision! :-)
